About Dr. Amar
Richard Amar, MD is a double board-certified psychiatrist in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry with more than 20 years of clinical experience.
Dr. Amar originally hails from Northern Virginia where he grew up wandering the many Smithsonian museums. He completed his undergraduate studies at The College of William and Mary where he graduated magna cum laude with concentration in Biology and Classical Music Performance.
He earned his medical degree from MCP-Hahnemann (now Drexel) University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and completed both his General Psychiatry Residency and Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia. During his residency, he served for one year as Chief Resident in Psychiatry for the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center (VAMC).
Before joining the Breakthru team, Dr. Amar served as a staff psychiatrist for eight years at the Atlanta VAMC, where he was Medical Director of the Evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and the STaR (Substance Abuse, Trauma, and Recovery) Program. He later joined the medical staff at Talbott Recovery, a premier addiction and mental health treatment center, in 2011, and was appointed Medical Director in 2024. In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Amar brings extensive experience in clinical research, administration, provider supervision, marketing, business development, performance improvement, policy and program development.
Dr. Amar takes a holistic, individualized approach to patient care, integrating expertise in psychopharmacology with psychotherapy and interventional treatment modalities. As a certified Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapist, he believes that patients achieve lasting recovery from within, through evidence-based treatments delivered in a supportive, nurturing environment.
Outside of work, Dr. Amar enjoys working out, listening to music, spending time with family and friends, gardening, exploring podcasts and audiobooks, and visiting local farmers markets.
