Breakthru Psychiatric Solutions in Sandy Springs and Alpharetta, Georgia, was co-founded by psychiatrist Dr. Karen Giles and business leader Jim Benjamin to offer innovative and compassionate mental health treatments. The clinic emerged during the COVID pandemic to help the nearly half of all patients with depression who do not improve with traditional antidepressant medications.
Dr. Karen Giles, MD, leads the Sandy Springs clinic and delivers expert care to people with moderate-to-severe depression, anxiety, PTSD, and OCD. Her specialty lies in treatment-resistant cases, an interest that developed during her training at Emory. Dr. Giles collaborates with patients to explore comprehensive treatment options based on individual goals, preferences, and experiences. She frequently checks in with patients undergoing acute treatments and provides second opinions and consultations upon referral.
Dr. Richard Amar, MD, is a double board-certified psychiatrist in General Psychiatry and Addiction Psychiatry with more than 20 years of clinical experience. Before joining Breakthru, he served as a staff psychiatrist at the Atlanta Veterans Affairs Medical Center, where he was Medical Director of the Evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and the STaR Program. Dr. Amar later joined Talbott Recovery, where he was appointed Medical Director in 2024. He brings extensive experience in clinical care, leadership, research, and program development.
Breakthru Psychiatric Solutions offers personalized, high-quality treatments, including Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS), Spravato, IV Ketamine, Vagus Nerve Stimulation (VNS), and Prism for PTSD. They plan to provide psychedelic treatments like MDMA and psilocybin once FDA-approved.
