About Dr. Smith
Melissa Smith, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist with a diverse and accomplished medical background. She currently supports Breakthru Psychiatric Solutions on a part-time basis. Dr. Smith and Dr. Giles share a longstanding professional relationship dating back to their time together at Emory University. There, Dr. Smith served on the faculty at the School of Medicine while Dr. Giles completed her psychiatry residency.
Dr. Smith began her medical career in general surgery, with specialized training in trauma and critical care. She later transitioned to psychiatry, completing her residency at Emory University. Over the years, she has served as a teacher and supervisor for resident physicians and fellows, building a strong foundation in both psychopharmacology and complex medication management.
Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Smith divides her time between Atlanta, Georgia and rural Idaho, allowing her to care for a broad and diverse patient population. She is also a passionate dog mom to two very old Yorkies and a miniature schnauzer named Moose who proudly sports a mullet (yes, really). When she’s not in the clinic or playing in a coed soccer league, she is probably skiing, hiking, or soaking in a natural hot spring.
Regardless of setting, her clinical philosophy remains the same: meet people where they are, listen with intention, and build trust—one conversation at a time.
